What is PayPal?
PayPal is straightforward to use and affordable, with a fixed rate of 2.9% + $ 0.30 for most online transactions.Merchants can easily add the payment tools to an existing website or integrate their choice of shopping carts and access a mobile point of sale and online billing tools.
However, This reviews from users indicate that customer service is inconsistent at best. Many are concerned about funds held due to it’s third-party processing model.
PayPal online payments
For the vast majority of merchants, setting up this tool means deciding how you want to accept payments online. It offers three options for web payments:
This Checkout is a simple solution if you only want to add it as a payment option on a website where you already accept credit cards or integrate with an e-commerce provider.
It takes care of the maintenance and upkeep for you. This is what you get with Checkout:
PCI Compliance – Since it redirects customers to your site to complete transactions, you don’t have to worry about PCI compliance at all.
Pop-up Payment Buttons: It will use what it knows about your customer to display easy-to-use “smart” payment buttons.
It payments Standard is a bit more complex than PayPal Checkout, but that’s because it gives merchants a bit more control and customization in their checkout process.
The standard plan includes all the e-commerce integrations that this Checkout offers but does not offer the “smart” payment buttons. However, this is what you get:
PCI Compliance – Similar to Checkout, PayPal directs its customers to its website to complete transactions, removing the burden of PCI compliance for merchants.

Customizable Payment Buttons – It says it only takes about 15 minutes to implement this Payments Standard, and it’s just a matter of copy and paste. With the payment buttons, you can create an online store where you can sell one item, 10, or as many as you like.
It’s button creation tools allow you to customize the buttons’ appearance and how certain aspects of the checkout process work (whether you want to shop immediately or allow customers to add items to a cart). Non-profit organizations can also create donation buttons with the ability to create one-time or recurring donations.
It’s most customizable online payment processing option, although it will cost you an additional $ 30 per month.
Hosted Checkout Page – If you prefer to keep your customers on your website throughout the checkout process, the Pro plan is worth considering. It allows you to customize the layout of your payment easily.
However, you bear some of the PCI burdens in the process. This makes it easier with tools like transparent redirects. You can expect to have to run self-assessments and quarterly scans to maintain PCI compliance.
Virtual terminal: if you want to accept payments by phone, PayPal’s virtual terminal will allow you to enter card numbers from a browser window. However, I think $ 30 per month is a pretty steep price to pay for this feature, given that Square and Shopify offer it at no additional cost.
Recurring billing: Technically, the PayPal Payment Pro plan does not include any recurring billing tool. This is an additional service that costs an additional $ 10 per month. Again, I think this is quite expensive, considering that Stripe offers much better prices and more flexible tools in this regard. (However, on the downside, you’ll need a developer to take full advantage of the features that Stripe offers.)
Transaction fees
Whichever plan you are on (standard or professional), your transaction fees will be as follows:
- For all types of online sales, you pay 2.9% + $ 0.30 per transaction.
- For all mobile and in-store slide/dip/mine transactions, you pay 2.7%.
- For all mobile and in-store transactions entered, you have to pay 3.5% + $ 0.15.
- For virtual terminal transactions, you have to pay 3.1% + $ 0.30 per transaction.
- You will pay 2% for bulk payments using the online form (maximum USD 1) or USD 0.25 per payment using the API.
- It’s also worth noting that some other fees apply to transactions as well:
- For any chargeback, PayPal applies a fee of $ 20.
Payments Pro
Remember that there are two options for accepting PayPal on your site that does not charge anything beyond the transaction fee: PayPal Checkout and PayPal Payments Standard. If you want a virtual terminal to receive payments over the phone, you’ll need PayPal Payments Pro:
Paypal Payments Pro: $ 30 per month
As I said, the biggest benefit is that the Payments Pro account allows you to keep customers on your page to complete the payment process. You can completely design your payment page. Besides, Payments Pro subscribers have access to the virtual terminal to accept payments by phone, mail and fax.
Unfortunately, It does not include a recurring billing option. Subscription services are top-rated, and if you want to offer them with it , it will cost you an additional $ 10 per month on top of the Pro plan. It offers free recurring billing for users who have implemented PayPal Checkout. but not this Standard
