The highlight of the year is the period between Diwali and Christmas Day when many stores run their biggest sales of the year. But why?
For most Indian online stores, the weeks between Dhanteras and New Year is a make or break period where they make their entire year’s profit. Gift-giving, home decorating, clothing, sweets and electronics, as well as self-care items are all purchased, sometimes in the same week. There’s an increase in traffic but ad costs are increasing as well and all the competitors are running the same festive offers.
This is why it is important to have a Shopify festive season checklist. The stores that win are not always the ones offering the lowest prices. They are the ones who have quick loading pages, a fast checkout process, accurate tracking, and realistic stock and shipping promises.
This guide takes you all the way through to check for Diwali sales on Shopify and Christmas sales for online stores, and has a week-by-week time frame of events that you can do even if you’re starting late.
Have you mastered the items below in your store?
Do you know how to do the things listed below? For each of the following questions, circle yes or no:
- Does your festive offer prominently appear on your home page on mobile after the first screen?
- Does your store load in under 3 seconds with a regular 4G cell phone connection?
- Is there frictionless payment alternatives for the customer through UPI, cards and COD (wallets)?
- Are you sure about your top 10 products you have and your delivery end dates?
- Does a purchase event fire correctly on your Meta Pixel, Conversions API and GA4?
Scoring: if you have 5 yes = you are in good shape. 3-4 = fix gaps this week. 0-2 = if you have time, go through all the checklists below, beginning with tracking and check-out.
The Complete Festive Checklist
1.Store Design and Theme.
- Include a holiday announcement bar. Display your primary offer as well as a coupon code and when the order will be delivered (e.g. “Order by 2 Nov for Diwali delivery”).
- Update the hero banner on the homepage. A single message, a single button, a single offer. Design it mobile first – the majority of festive traffic is mobile.
- Make a Christmas collection. Gift sets, gifts under ₹999, Decor for Diwali, Christmas picks. Connect it using the main menu.
- Check mobile speed. Optimize images and remove unused apps and heavy sliders, and verify using Google PageSpeed Insights. The extra second equals the loss of the conversion.
- Remove any extraneous design elements. The visuals should complement the offer and not overpower it.
2. Home Page or Landing Page
- Create holiday gift bundles and gift sets. Average order value increases with bundles and makes it easier to make a gifting decision.
- Add urgency honestly. Avoid using countdown timers for anything other than actual deadlines (e.g. offer close date or last shipping date).
- Upsell and cross-sell. Add the following “frequently bought together” blocks along with a free-shipping progress bar (“Add ₹300 more for free delivery”).
- Improve product pages. Photographs, brief descriptions of the benefits, size guides, reviews and visible estimate of delivery.
- Offer gift options. A few extras like gift wrap, a gift message field and hidden prices on invoices will make people feel like they have a gift for the season.
3. Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)
- Simplify checkout. Allow guest checkout and have as few fields as possible on the checkout form and fill in the address details.
- Provide the payment options Indian customers are looking for. All margins for UPI, major cards, net banking, wallets and COD. To minimize COD returns, think of a small discount.
- Show trust signals. Place payment badges, return policy, customer reviews and contact information alongside the Add to Cart buttons and checkout buttons.
- Set up Abandoned Cart Recovery. There is a significant recovery rate of sales due to a series of email and WhatsApp reminders sent at 1 hour, 24 hours and 72 hours.
- Prior to the sale, test the entire purchasing process with two phones and one desktop, on all payment methods.
4. Inventory and Shipping
- Determine your stock, plan for your best sellers. Reference data from the previous year, and factor in more of a cushion for spike-ups from ads.
- Establish definite delivery deadlines. Review with your courier partners and post on your product pages, cart and announcement bar.
- Discuss with your courier in advance. Delays with festive volumes, keep back up carrier with key pin code.
- Update shipping and returns policy. Specify when and how things work for exchanges and exceptions during holidays etc.
- Make use of Low Stock Alerts and hide or mark sold out items to never sell what you can’t ship.
5. Marketing and Ads
- Create a prospecting campaign using holiday ads, add retargeting ads to visitors, add to carts, and past customers. Don’t over refresh ideas, just refresh every 5-7 days to avoid fatigue.
- Google Ads and Shopping: Ensure that your Merchant Center feed is tidy, titles have festive season keywords and prices are accurate on the website. Try adding performance max or shopping campaigns to high intent search terms.
- Create custom audiences ASAP. Upload customers lists, make lookalikes before the costs are at their highest.
- Make your budget in steps. A typical strategy is to spend less in the teaser stage, continue to increase spending closer to the sale and spend more on the big peak days, only allocating funds to campaigns that are showing good ROAS.
- Create creatives across different formats (Reels, stories, carousels and static posts) in English and regional language relevant to region.
6. SMS Marketing.8. Video marketing.
- Ahead of the festive season, give subscribers a preview of what’s to come and give them early access as pre-festive teasers.
- Flash-sale sequences: Brief, impactful messages containing one offer and a time limit.
- Post purchase flows: Order confirmation, shipping information, request for a review, cross-sell for next occasion (such as Christmas after Diwali).
- Safeguard consent and frequency. Only send to those who have opted in and no more than 1-2 messages per day.
7. Analytics and Tracking
- Verify that the following events are being tracked: view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, purchase events.Verify that the following events are tracked: view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout and purchase events.
- Do not miss out on data due to browser privacy protection by using both Meta Pixel and the Conversions API. In the Events Manager, check Deduplication.
- UTM tagging: Make sure that all your ads, emails and WhatsApp links are properly tagged to see which channel is responsible for each sale.
- Festive sales dashboard: Create a basic Looker Studio / Google Sheets dashboard with revenue, orders, conversion rate, AOV, ROAS and top products, which updates daily.
- Make benchmarks and alerts so that you know about a broken pixel or sudden drop in conversions on the first day, not the fifth.
8. Customer Support
- Make sure that your FAQs reflect any updated delivery dates, offer terms, return policies and payment assistance for the holidays.
- Incorporate a chatbot or a COD or order tracking button into the website to handle queries.
- Establish response time goals such as less than 1 hour reply time on WhatsApp and less than 12 hours reply time on email during the sales period.
- Talk to your team about offers, policies and escalation procedures prior to launching.

Some of the most common mistakes made during the festive season.
1.Testing checkout is not performed at the time of launching. Just one of the payment gateways or one broken coupon can cost a whole day of ad money.
2. Overpromising delivery dates. Bad reviews and refunds result from late gifts.
3. Ignoring mobile experience. The majority of holiday shoppers are on the phone.
5. The budget is not adjusted in accordance with tracking results. It’s impossible to improve what you can’t measure.
Using the same creative for more than a week. Audiences who attend festivities soon become bored.
6. Discounting everything. Don’t blanket cut, use free gifts and tiered offers to protect margins.
7. Forgetting post-purchase. The best bet to repeat customers is festive buyers.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. When should I start preparing my Shopify store for Diwali?
Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before Diwali. This gives you time to fix speed and tracking, plan inventory, build audiences and test your checkout before ad costs rise.
2. What payment methods should a Shopify store offer during festive sales in India?
Offer UPI, debit and credit cards, net banking and wallets. Add cash on delivery if your margins and return rates allow it, and consider a small prepaid discount to encourage online payment.
3. How much should I increase my ad budget for Diwali and Christmas?
There is no fixed number. Start with a modest budget during the teaser phase, then scale gradually on campaigns with healthy ROAS. Expect higher costs per click during peak days and plan for that.
4. How do I stop my Shopify store from slowing down during a traffic spike?
Compress images, remove unused apps and scripts, avoid heavy sliders and test with Google PageSpeed Insights before the sale. Shopify handles hosting, so most slowdowns come from the theme and apps.
5. What tracking should be set up before a festive sale?
GA4 ecommerce events, Meta Pixel with Conversions API, UTM tagging on all campaigns and a daily sales dashboard. Verify everything with a test order before launch.
